Best air conditioners in India 2020 (Buying Guide)

Most of the Indian public belongs to a middle-class family and purchasing air conditioners is once in a blue moon for them. So it is necessary to find the right air conditioner for the first time itself. Although, awareness level among people nowadays is much higher than the 1990s still it is very tough to find the best air conditioners in India when so much varieties are available in the market. So, there is a need to be aware of various features, specifications, and technology of air conditioners available in the market. So I have prepared a comprehensive buying guide for you by going through which it will very be easy for you to select the right air conditioner for your home. The below guideline will definitely make you decide which are the best air conditioners in India at your own.

Factors affecting the selection of air conditioners: Best air conditioners in India

Size

While discussing with someone about air conditioner you must have listened about the tonnage of air conditioners like 1 tone AC, 1.5 tone AC or 2 ton AC. Do you know actually what is tonnage and how its variability affects the performance of AC?

Actually, Ton is the amount of heat the air conditioner removes from the room in one hour. The mathematical unit for tonnage is BTU (British Thermal Units). 1 ton equals 12000 BTU. Higher the BTU, the greater is the cooling effect.

So, obviously higher the size of the room, AC with higher tonnage will be required.

Room Size 0-90 Sq Ft 90-150 Sq Ft 150-300 Sq Ft
Tonnage 1 ton 1.5 ton 2 ton

Besides, the size of the room there is other factors also on which selection of right tonnage of an air conditioner depends. These are tabulated below.

Place you live in Location of room Occupants in room
If you are living in a place where the outside temperature remains high then you will be in need of an AC with higher tonnage. For example, in Jaipur, you need a higher tonnage air conditioner as compare to Bengaluru or Pune Rooms at the ground floor or at mid floors of a building will require less tonnage air conditioners as compare to rooms located at the top floor where sunlight falls directly on the roof of the room. Higher the number of occupants in the room, the higher the tonnage of the air conditioner will be required.

  1. Electricity consumption

The common question of every Indian buyer while buying an electronic item is “ye kitni bijli khata hai”. So to give an idea of average electricity consumption by an air conditioner every company gives a star rating like 3 stars, 4 Stars or 5 stars. Do you know actually what a star rating is?

So from the above figure, you can have a basic idea of how the star rating of a particular air conditioner reflects its average electricity consumption. But this is not the sole criterion to assess the energy consumption of a product because this star rating is for ideal conditions. Energy consumption also depends on a lot of other environmental and operating factors. A 5-star product can consume more energy than a 3 star in different operational and environmental conditions. Let us discuss those factors in brief.

1. Operational factors

Every air conditioner is provided with different types of operational modes to suit different operating conditions. The number of modes in an AC varies with a different type of brand and modal. So while buying an air conditioner you must look into this factor. Higher the number of modes an AC is equipped with higher the energy-efficient that AC will be. So let us understand the different operational modes of the air conditioner with the table below.

Operational Modes

Cool modeDry modeEnergy-saving modeQuick cool modeFan ModeSleep mode6th sense cooling
This is the default mode given in every AC. This is ideally sat at 25 degree CelsiusIf you are living in a city nearby a sea or at a place with high humidity than a conditioner with this mode will serve your purpose. In this mode, the compressor shuts down automatically when the temperature of the air reaches the level set in the thermostat. The fan keeps running to maintain the coolness. When the temperature exceeds a certain level, the compressor starts functioning again. Many air conditioners nowadays are equipped with this mode. In this mode, AC quickly cools down room temperature to 16-18 degrees Celsius. This mode is not energy efficient and consumes a lot of electricity. In this mode, the only fan runs but compressor remains off so cooling effects are nil. It is better to avoid this mode. This mode should be used in the night when the outside temperature falls gradually. It saves a lot of energy. This mode is available in some particular brands only like a whirlpool. In this mode speed of the fan is automatically adjusted as per room temperature.

2. Environmental factors

LocationSize of roomNumber of occupantsColour
The location of your home is the major factor in deciding the energy consumption of your air conditioner. If you are living in Rajasthan than obviously, your AC will consume more electricity to mitigate higher outside temperature conditions than a person living in Mumbai or Bengaluru. As we have discussed earlier, larger the room size higher will be the energy consumptionAn air conditioner installed in a tuition classroom or with more number of occupants will consume more energy than an air conditioner installed in single or double member occupants’ room. This is primarily because every human body generates heat. So higher the occupants higher will be the heat generation and AC will have to consume more electricity to absorb that heat.It is always advisable to get your room interior like walls and furniture to be light color painted because darker color absorbs more heat and air conditioner will need more energy to cool down this heat.

Copper Coil vs Aluminum coil in AC – Which is better?

The most confusing question among AC buyers is whether the copper coil is better or aluminum coil? Before going into the basic difference between these two coils we should know the purpose of these coils in an air conditioner.

An air conditioner works on the basis of compression, condensation, and evaporation. This involves moving of the refrigerant gas or inside coils in gaseous as well as liquid forms. So coil is one of the most important parts which affects the performance of an air conditioner. Previously, only copper made coils were in use but later in the decade of 1980s use of aluminum coils made a revolution in the industry as they were much cheaper than copper coils.

You can understand the difference between aluminum foil and copper coil by the below comparison.

Aluminum Coil Characteristics Copper Coil
Cheaper Price Costlier
More flexible Flexibility Less flexible than copper, so more amount of copper required which make it costlier
Less heat transfer than copper Heat transfer Better heat transfer than aluminum
Maintenance is high Maintenance Ease of maintenance
Coil to be replaced if corroded Corrosion Prone to corrosion but can be repaired easily
Less durable Durability Stronger than aluminum so more durable
So, from the above-tabulated comparison, it is evident that although copper coils are costlier than aluminum coil still they are preferable due to high performance and low maintenance cost.

Which air conditioner is best? Inverter or non-inverter?

An air conditioner work just opposite to the principle of an air cooler. An air cooler sucks hot air from outside and throws it inside by passing it over the cool water, whereas an air conditioner absorbs heat from indoor air and throws this heat outside.

The basic principle for inverter & non-inverter AC is the same. It consists of an evaporator coil through which a liquid refrigerant runs. this liquid refrigerant absorbs heat from indoor air thus making indoor air cool. In this process, refrigerant converts inro gaseous state due to the absorption of heat and travel to the compressor.

Compressor than squeezes this gaseous refrigerant making it suitable for condensation. A condenser which is normally an outside unit of AC than condenses the refrigerant by absorbing heat from it. This heat is dumped outside by the condenser and refrigerant converts in liquid form once again and travels towards the evaporator. This process is repeated again and again until the desired room temperature is achieved.

The above mentioned basic principle is followed in both inverter and non-inverter AC. But the main difference is of compressor operation. In non-inverter AC compressors remain either shut or run as per thermostat instruction whereas in inverter AC compressor remain always ON. For more information about inverter and non-inverter technology, benefits of inverter technology please read –Inverter or non-inverter? Which is better technology?

Which brand of AC is best in India?

Brand of the product is the criteria which fascinate the Indian customer the most. It is because branded products are considered as an outcome of international standards. They are considered as conformance to quality.

But nowadays the perception of quality has changed drastically. Today, quality means customer satisfaction. If a newcomer in the market with no brand value is satisfying the customer need more effectively than definitely people will prefer his products more than branded products.

Redmi mobiles are the best example. When their parent company Xiaomi entered Indian markets their brand value was almost zero for Indian customers as compared to Samsung, lava, Micromax, etc. But now they are providing the best features at a relatively low price. And within 3 years they are the biggest mobile phone brand in India.

So, Brand value is decided by the customer. In my point of view, If you want to buy an air conditioner and if some unknown brand is satisfying all your needs at a relatively lower price than an established brand then you should not waste your money on higher brand value.

I am giving some basic details about different air conditioner manufacturers in India in the below table which will make you acquainted with their technologies and brand values. This will also help you to find the best air conditioners in India.

Types of Air conditioner  Brands

We can divide air conditioner brands into two types based on their quality:-

Premium Brands:-

These are the original manufacturer brands of air conditioner and known for premium quality products:

1. O-General

  • Costliest Brand
  • Premium quality
  • Most durable and long-lasting products
  • Perform well even at very high ambient temperature

2. Mitsubishi Heavy duty

  • Cheaper than O general
  • Premium quality
  • Good durability
  • Low operational noise

3. Mitsubishi Electric

  • Lower quality than Mitsubishi Heavy-duty, but still much higher quality than other below-mentioned brands
  • Low operational noise

4. Daikin

  • Japanese Brand
  • Cheaper when compared to O-General and Mitsubishi
  • Tremendous quality
  • Very low noise operation

5. Hitachi

  • Price is Cheaper than O general and Mitsubishi but almost similar to Daikin
  • Superb Quality
  • Patented features like auto cleaning of filters

6. Carrier

  • The oldest manufacturer of air conditioners
  • USA Brand
  • Price is cheaper than the above brands but product quality is superb
  • Best choice for air conditioner, premium quality at a relatively low price

7. Bluestar

  • Indian brand
  • The cheapest brand with premium quality
  • The largest brand used in offices and shopping mall for central cooling technology

8. Sanyo

  • Japanese Brand
  • Latest entrants in air conditioner market
  • Known for very low-cost products
  • Low quality as compared to other premium brands

 Low-Quality Brands

All other brands which you have heard of are low-quality brands as they are not the original manufacturer of air conditioners. They use assembled parts of lower quality as compared to premium brands. Name of these brands are:-

  • LG
  • Voltas
  • Samsung
  • Panasonic
  • Godrej
  • Onida
  • IFB etc

I am giving a general idea of LG, Voltas and Samsung brand here:

 LGVoltasSamsung
CountryKoreaIndiaKorea
Brand value in IndiaVery HighHighHigh
Technology
& Features
1. Uses the latest technology which allows consistent cooling instead of peaks and troughs.

2. Best established brand in India.

3. The best warranty period on the compressor.

4. Best service provider.
1. The outcome of the joint venture between Tata and Volkart Brothers.

2. One of the cheapest brands in India.

3. Vast dealer and servicing center network.
1. Huge service network provider in India.

2. Limited to split invertors ACs only.

3. Latest technology like 8-Pole inverter motor for durability and power. Smart Install using which the AC performs a self-test to find if it is correctly installed.

Above mentioned ideas of various brands should not be considered as a recommendation for buying. Because buying an air conditioner depends on a number of factors that I have mentioned in the upper part of this article. For example for an Indian customer, Although O general & Mitsubishi are of premium brands but their servicing and customer care quality is very low as compared to LG, Voltas, and Daikin brands.

I am providing you a crisp checklist to choose an ideal Air conditioner for your home or office. Just follow these steps and you will get the best air conditioner for your home.

7 Point checklist to buy the best Air conditioner

1.Types of ACWindow/split/cassette/towerSplit/window AC is the best

Additional noteworthy Tips

  • Don’t go for an air conditioner brand whose customer service center is not nearby to your home.
  • During the installation of the air conditioner ensure that the technician is from the same service center whose brand air conditioner you have purchased. It is because installing an AC is a skilled technician job and if there is any damage to AC during the installation process due to naiveness of technician you will have the option to complain to customer care.
  • Some models of ACs require an extra length of the power cable to operate besides cable provided in a carton of AC (Pls check that)
  • Go for a voltage regulator also to avoid malfunctioning of AC due to power fluctuation
  • Last but not least….Try to go for a 5 star AC..A 5 star AC is not only energy efficient but its every component is made up of superb quality materials.
